The best obstetrician is the one who really listens

About My Obstetric Services

From your first enquiry about antenatal services to every ultrasound and test along the way the journey leads toward your big day: the day when you give birth to your baby at St John of God Subiaco Hospital in Perth. On this page, let’s look at the general overview of my services as a Perth obstetrician.

From antenatal to
delivery and postnatal care

Your pregnancy is one of the biggest possible journeys a human being can undertake: you are preparing to bring your baby into this world. So let’s look at the different steps involved in obstetric care.

When you have found out that you are pregnant, it is recommended to choose your model for antenatal care and delivery (also called your birthing method). In case you choose to use a private obstetrician, then you are welcome at my practice to plan your antenatal care.

Antenatal care is the common term for your appointments, tests, consultations and ultrasounds at regular intervals during your pregnancy. The goal is to monitor your and your baby’s health and wellbeing.

Postnatal care helps you recover from birth, and helps you underway in your ‘new life’ with your newborn baby. Our team, the midwives and your obstetrician are here to share their experience so you can step into your new role with clear information and confidence.

A word about
private health insurance

Although we have an excellent public system here in Australia and in Perth, privately insured patients tell me they choose private health for a number of reasons. The choice of their specialist is often the first thing that comes to mind.

If you are privately insured, you are free to determine what works best for you: an obstetrician in your local community, or someone who has particular expertise, approach or communication style.

I also recommend checking your cover and your private health policy in detail, if possible even before you are pregnant. Health funds in Australia apply a 12-month waiting period for antenatal care and obstetrics. It means you will want to get total clarity about your cover at least 12 months before you are admitted to hospital.

I recommend taking a close look at your health insurance policy. Some of the lower-cost policies do not cover obstetrics at all, or they only pay restricted benefits.

What difference does it make
if I have private health insurance?

With private health insurance, your antenatal care, delivery and postnatal care will follow a different path, compared to giving birth in the public system. As you prepare to give birth, you will notice that you have access to some additional benefits.

Being able to give birth in one of Perth’s leading private hospitals in terms of maternity, here at St John of God Mount Subiaco Hospital, is one of those benefits. The hospital midwives, the quality of the rooms and boarding options for your partner, the extended hospital stay to help you recover after birth and to get help with breastfeeding, those are some of the additional services available to you as a patient who uses private health insurance.

I believe that the best way to look at this amazing journey (from when you fall pregnant to when you start enjoying your new family life) is to see it as a partnership. Nature and your body do the heavy lifting – but as your private obstetrician, I bring my expertise and presence so you get the support that you need.
